Computing-Info
This site is a guide to the computing and Internet facilities at the colleges and departments of Cambridge University.
As the vast majority of students are provided with Internet access by their college (without being able to obtain alternative Internet access from another provider), we believe that the quality of Internet access provided by a student's chosen college will have a notable impact on their quality of life, as well as their academic and recreational pursuits. This site is primarily aimed at Cambridge applicants for technical subjects, such as computer science and engineering, as well as people who make significant use of the Internet in their spare time. In particular if you plan to run a web server, play games, participate in online communities or use a VoIP service such as Skype you should check to see if your chosen college allows this.
Broadly speaking, college-provided Internet access gives higher speed but noticeably more restricted access to the Internet than a broadband provider such as NTL cable, BTOpenworld or any ADSL ISP, hence anybody making use of the Internet for more than just web browsing would do well to use this site to briefly research any college they plan on applying to.
We also attempt to provide information on computing services common to the entire university, as well as student-run computing related societies and facilities along with information about ways you can get involved with and meet others with an interest in computing.
